The Museum of Prehistory and Early History on the Willibaldsburg (former name: Museum of Prehistory and Early History Eichstätt ) is an archaeological museum in the Willibaldsburg in Eichstätt in Upper Bavaria .

Even Johannes Aventinus (1477-1534) had studied on the Willibaldsburg at the beginning of the 16th century the first discoveries, but systematic excavations were carried out from the 19th century. The Eichstätt Historical Association was founded in 1886. In the following year, the local history museum was set up on the Willibaldsburg, in which the Roman collection of the historical association going back to Friedrich Winkelmann (1852-1934) and Karl Ritter von Popp (1825-1905) was exhibited. This fell victim to a pillage in 1945. In 1980 the museum was redesigned and converted into a regional history museum for the Eichstätt district. The museum is supervised by the department for the preservation of art and cultural property of the city and the district of Eichstätt.

The museum was set up in 1980 on the first floor of the Gemmingen building in the south wing and presents the regional development history almost completely from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages . The permanent exhibition is structured chronologically according to cultural and historical epochs. The showpieces of the exhibition include Ice Age animal skeletons such as that of a mammoth , finds from the Roman Fort Pfünz and the associated camp village with its temples, as well as sumptuous additions from Merovingian burial fields . The exhibition is supplemented by models, pewter figure dioramas and display boards. There are regular special exhibitions on historical topics.
