The " Museum for the Chinese Sturgeon " (中华鲟 博物馆 / 中華鱘 博物館 Zhōnghuá xún bówùguǎn) was founded in 1993 as part of the “Research Institute for the Chinese Sturgeon” (中华鲟 研究所 / 中華鱘 研究所 Zhōnghuá xún yánjiūsuǒ) in Yichang on the Yangtze River opened. It is located in the so-called “Sturgeon Park” (鲟 园 / 鱘 園 xún yuán) on Xiaoxita Island on the Huangbai River. The river flows into the Yangtze River above the Gezhouba Dam within the city of Yichang.

The task of the museum is to present the efforts to preserve the endangered Chinese sturgeon ( Acipenser sinensis ) to a broad public and to raise awareness of the need for environmental protection.

In the park, with an area of ​​around 20,000 m², there are houses for the sword sturgeon ( Psephurus gladius ), the endangered Chinese alligator ( Alligator sinensis ) and the Chinese giant salamander ( Andrias davidianus ) in addition to the actual sturgeon museum and a basin with large Chinese sturgeons .

A breeding center for Chinese sturgeon is operated in the museum area. This species of fish has lived on Earth since the time of the dinosaurs, about 140 million years. In 2015 the Chinese sturgeon was designated Critically Endangered by the IUCN .
