John Ryan (born September 29, 1939 in Newport ) is a former Welsh rugby union player and coach. He played as a winger .
Ryan played for the London Welsh and the Welsh school selection before moving to Newport RFC in 1959 . In 22 games for the club, he put three attempts . In 1973 he took over the coaching position at Newport. In 1977 he won the Welsh Cup with the club. He was able to repeat this success in 1981 with Cardiff . Between 1988 and 1990 he was the Welsh national coach. Under him, however, only two of the nine games were won, after a 34-6 defeat against England , he resigned.
