The Museum for Russian-German Cultural History in Detmold is the first and only museum in Germany that is dedicated to the cultural history of Russian- Germans.

The museum is supported by the Association for Russian-German Culture and Folklore. The museum is funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media .

Emergence

The initiative to found the museum came from Otto Hertel, a teacher and human rights activist with a Russian-German migration background. He collected the first objects and created a traveling exhibition. The first larger collection was donated between 1989 and 1994 by the Russian-German sculptor Jakob Wedel . On March 16, 1996 Otto Hertel opened the museum for the first time in Georgstrasse in Detmold.

After Hertel's death in 1999, Katharina Neufeld took over the management of the museum. In 2002 the Association for Russian-German Culture and Folklore was founded. V., which took over the sponsorship of the museum. From 2009 the sponsoring association began planning a new building for the museum, also in Georgstraße. The new building was opened in 2011 with the permanent exhibition “Unpacked. The past and present of the Germans from Russia ”opens. Since 2016, funding from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media has enabled the museum to continue to exist and expand its content. After Katharina Neufeld's retirement in 2017, Kornelius Ens took over the management of the house.

museum

The permanent exhibition “Unpacked. The history and present of the Germans from Russia ”shows on two floors with a total of 500 square meters the history of the Russian Germans since the first German colonists, who accepted an invitation from Catherine the Great from 1763 to their return as (late) emigrants, especially in the 1990s.

In two special exhibition rooms with a total of 100 square meters, the museum deepens the contents of the permanent exhibition, changing every year. In addition to the rooms for the exhibitions and the collection, the museum has a scientific library accessible to visitors and an archive that can be used on request. A working group for family research is also affiliated to the museum and provides mutual support for genealogical questions. The museum cooperates with various scientific institutions, including the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Eastern Europe (University of Oldenburg) and the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (University of Osnabrück).
