Jakob Wedel

Jakob Wedel (born July 24, 1931 in Nikolaipol / Bergtal , Kyrgyz SSR , Soviet Union ; † July 30, 2014 in Detmold ) was a Russian-German artist and sculptor . He lived and worked mainly in Schieder-Schwalenberg ( East Westphalia-Lippe ).

Life

Jakob Wedel was born as the third child in a Russian Mennonite farming family in Kyrgyzstan. In the 1930s, seven people from his close relatives, including carvers , joiners and musicians , were arrested and shot by the Stalinist rulers - u. a. also his father. In 1942 Wedel's mother was drafted into the Trud Army, so that five children, including Jakob, were left alone. The mother survived and came back to the family after five years. While Jakob Wedel had to work hard as a farmer and carpenter during these years, he did not give up his passion for carving . At 32, he was given the opportunity in Frunze the sculpture to study. Because of his masterful achievements Wedel achieved great recognition in Russia, Kyrgyzstan and also internationally. From 1988 Jakob Wedel lived and worked in Germany and is probably the most famous Russian-German sculptor.

Russian-German Museum

Together with the Russian-German school founder Otto Hertel , Jakob Wedel contributed to the establishment of the Museum for Russian-German Cultural History with the exhibition of his works of art in Detmold . With his works, Wedel has always supported the work of the museum, which was also its largest public platform.
