Mfw Mühldorf museum signal box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The museum signal box Mfw is located in the railway station of Mühldorf in Upper Bavaria. It was put into operation in 1942 as part of the station renovation, which was necessary due to the increased volume of freight. The designation Mfw means Mühldorf Fahrdienstleiter West .

The design of the signal box represents the technology of the VES 4-row lever system , which was modern at the time . With this design, the control levers are not just next to each other as in older designs, but also in 4 rows behind one another. This type of construction therefore required less space for the control table, or larger control areas could be assigned to the respective interlocking. The design as such requires a relatively complicated relay room, which is located under the table and in which the actual setting processes take place. By turning the control buttons on the control panel, a shaft is mechanically moved, which one floor below controls the corresponding relays via electrical contacts. This is where the term " electromechanical " comes from . Due to the design of the control buttons in four rows one behind the other , there is a certain overall height in the relay room, since the shaft contacts there must be on top of each other due to the design . In addition to the 4-row lever system, the United Railway Signalworks (VES) also built 2- and 7-row lever systems (7-row lever systems, however, only in the Netherlands).

In addition to the Mfw signal box, the Mühldorf station had the following signal boxes until the electronic signal box went into operation in 1999:

  • Signal box Mfo ( electromechanical - type VES 4-row lever mechanism)
  • Signal box Mp (electromechanical - type E43)
  • Signal box Mm (electromechanical - type VES 2-row lever mechanism)
  • Signal box Mb (electromechanical - type Siemens & Halske 1912, in operation until 2006)
  • Signal box Ma (electromechanical flow signal box - type Siemens & Halske 1912)
  • Signal box Mw (mechanical - standard design)

In 2003 the association "Friends of Historical Railway Mühldorf eV" was founded , with the aim of setting up a museum signal box in the Mfw signal box . In addition to the function of the railway safety technology, the railway history of the railway lines starting from Mühldorf is illuminated here. The association organizes special trips and restores railway vehicles such as the “Franzi” steam storage locomotive , which was set up as a monument locomotive in front of the signal box.
