The USS Nassau (LHA-4) was a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy . She could transport around 1900 men of the Marine Corps .

history

LHA-4 was commissioned on November 6, 1970 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding on August 13, 1973 . Before the keel was laid, the Navy disagreed on the name of the ship. At first, Leyte Gulf was considered, but then the name Boxer was given until the Navy agreed on the name Nassau . After more than four years, the Nassau was launched on January 21, 1978, the christening was carried out by Mrs. Louis H. Wilson, wife of the former commandant of the Marine Corps. The commissioning took place on July 28, 1979.

During the NATO maneuver Ocean Safari 85 in the North Atlantic, Nassau Hamburg paid a visit from September 24 to 28, 1985. From there, the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship went on a visit to Portsmouth, England , where it arrived on September 30th. On October 12, 1985, the lines were tied up in her home port of Norfolk, Virginia . During the Second Gulf War , the Nassau was in action for eight months, and in the years that followed, the ship moved several times to European and Arabian waters.

At the beginning of 2010 the Nassau was to be relocated to the Persian Gulf. After the severe earthquake in Haiti , she and her combat group, consisting of USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19) and USS Ashland (LSD-48) , were briefly dispatched to the coast of the affected region to provide aid to the people affected .

On March 31, 2011, the Nassau was decommissioned.
