Villa Stahmer

The Villa Stahmer is the museum of the city of Georgsmarienhütte in Lower Saxony and is located in what is now the Oesede district , which was an independent municipality at the time of construction. The building, erected in 1900 as an upper-class residence , was the residence of the entrepreneur Robert Stahmer and his family until 1907, has been used as a museum since 1980 and is a listed building .

architecture

The two-storey building has half-timbered construction typical of the region on the gable side . The tower with a square base and a pointed hipped roof is also provided with a framework. A special feature of the equipment is the bathroom in oriental style . The comfortable master bedroom gives a further impression of the life of an entrepreneurial family in the early 20th century in the predominantly agricultural Osnabrück region .

Client

The villa was built by the entrepreneur Carl Stahmer (1833–1905) for his son Robert. A second neighboring building for the son Ernst (1867–1929) was demolished in 1939.

Carl Stahmer came from Clausthal-Zellerfeld , was initially a mechanical engineer at the steelworks and in 1886 went into business for himself as a manufacturer of railway signal systems. His company had an important market position around 1900.

In 1907, Robert Stahmer and his family left the villa and moved to Bruchsal , where he managed a branch that was designed for sales in southern Germany and abroad and which competed there with the Bruchsal AG machine factory, formerly Schnabel & Henning .

The Maschinenfabrik Bruchsal AG formerly Schnabel & Henning took over in 1917, the C. Stahmer AG and Zimmermann & Buchloh AG (in Borsigwalde near Berlin) by fusion to the German railway signaling Werke AG , which in turn, 1,926 railway signal Bauanstalten Max Jüdel , Stahmer, Bruchsal AG rose . A strategic market alliance with Siemens & Halske AG and AEG resulted in the United Eisenbahn-Signalwerke GmbH (VES) , which was completely taken over by the Siemens Group after the Second World War .

Usage history

From 1907, the stately home served as the official residence of the respective technical directors of the plant until the end of the 1920s. The second floor was later occupied by two teachers, the ground floor and the first floor were empty. After the end of the Second World War, the villa was confiscated by the British occupation forces . From 1947 it was used by the employment office. In 1968 the Villa Stahmer became the property of the municipality of Oesede , which has belonged to the town of Georgsmarienhütte since 1970. From 1975 to 1980 the building was converted into a museum. It opened in 1980. In 2001 the art school Paletti Georgsmarienhütte eV moved into the basement. There she has two studio rooms, her office and a small storage room. The art school's courses take place in the atelier throughout the year. During all school holidays, holiday workshops are held there by the art school and the municipal youth organization.

In 2012, the Paletti art school celebrated its 20th anniversary there. In 2015, the art school moved into the coach house that was part of the historic building ensemble and was renovated with state funds.

museum

The Museum Villa Stahmer houses several workshops that give an insight into the manual work methods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This includes a bakery, a bookbinding shop and a printing shop. A historical kitchen gives an impression of the laborious housework during this time. The breakfast room, the furnishings of a bedroom, stucco ceilings, lead-glazed windows and the stairs for the maids of the house have been preserved from the time of the earlier residents. In addition, the history of the “industrial village” Georgsmarienhütte and its iron and steel works , which was once the largest employer in the southern district of Osnabrück, is conveyed. A panorama view of the old steelworks has been shown since 2003. It is thanks to the expellees from the former Oberschwedeldorf (Szalejów Górny), who have found a new home in large numbers in Oesede, that with the Heimatstube Oberschwedeldorf the Silesian homeland also has its place here. Temporary exhibitions are presented on the second floor. There are also concerts in the Villa Stahmer.
