Mörbylånga is a place ( Tatort ) on the Swedish island of Öland in the province of Kalmar län and the historic province of Öland. The main town of the municipality of the same name is only the second largest town in the municipality, as it is surpassed by Färjestaden in terms of area and population.
history
The oldest relics in history are the passage graves of Resmo east of Mörbylånga and the castle of Bårby south of the village .
In 1820 Mörbylånga received the status of a free minority town (köping ). This status was abolished when Mörbylånga Municipality was established in 1952. Previously, the place had made great efforts to obtain city rights. This is particularly evident in the design of the site. At the beginning of the 20th century, a boulevard ( esplanades) was laid from the port through the town.
For a long time Mörbylånga was connected to Kalmar by steamboats, which had a positive effect on the development of the place. However, population growth has stagnated since the 1950s.
economy
In the early 1990s, the sugar factory, which had been the town's largest employer until then, was shut down. Today Mörbylånga's economy is characterized by tourism, agriculture and other food industries. Many residents also commute to work in Kalmar.
