The Mushafen. Detail from the Zwingli portal of the Grossmünster in Zurich

A Mushafen is literally a "Breitopf" and describes a post-Reformation alms foundation in Bern and Zurich .

During the Reformation, the councils of the cities of Bern and Zurich founded the Mushafen in each of the abolished Dominican monasteries on the basis of Huldrych Zwingli's alms order from 1525 . These were charitable foundations that financed the feeding of the poor, needy students and pupils with puree , bread and sometimes meat.

Zwingli's alms order took the feeding of the poor from the church and handed it over to the authorities.
