Music workstations are electronic musical instruments that consist of an electronic sound generator , a keyboard and various other components such as sequencers , effects devices , samplers or drum computers . A workstation should enable a musician to produce a whole piece with a single device. The first workstation was the Korg M1 , which was presented at the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 1988 . At that time, software-based music production was not yet widespread; the innovation was to combine various hardware components in a single device.

Major manufacturers of workstations are Korg , Roland and Yamaha .
