history

100 years logo

Hermann Schmidt laid the foundation stone when he produced his first compound feed on a small scale near Wuppertal in Radevormwald in 1903. The Muskator company was founded in 1911 and is based in the Düsseldorf harbor , where the Deuka and Fortin also settled. In 1930 Westdeutsche Mühlenwerke GmbH and with it the Ovator brand were taken over. A second plant was created in Bamberg around 1962. Mannheim followed in 1966, followed by the Deggendorf plant in 1969. In 1987 two previous employees, u. a. Christian Barnewitz , the company as a partner. In 1990 the Saxon Muskator-Werke Tierernahrung GmbH & Co. KG Riesa was founded. It was not until 1994 that it merged with the other plants. In 2001, after the departure of the second previous managing director, the company name was changed to Muskator-Werke GmbH. The managing director Michael Moll received all company shares. Operations ceased in March 2013. The site has been fallow ever since. Negotiations with an investor have apparently been going on since 2018.

Feed

Muskator-Werke sells its feed products under the three brands Muskator (farm animals), Ovator (pets) and PegaPlus (horses)

Muscator

Laying hen feed was already being produced at the Radevormwald site before 1911 . Fattening poultry feed is produced at the Mannheim location using a thermal sanitation system in order to reduce the risk of salmonella . Dairy cattle feed is produced according to three different standards in order to be able to assess the performance of the dairy cows on the basis of the various concepts:

  • the Dutch DVE system ( d poor v erdauliches E iweiß)
  • the German nXP system (usable crude protein in the intestine)
  • optimized for crude protein.

Ovator

Ovator includes bird food, racing pigeon food, rabbit and rodent food, and dog and cat food. These products are not manufactured in-house, as these feeds contain animal proteins and their use in ruminant feed, among other things, is prohibited. Fish feed is sold in two fish feed groups: carp feed (Bamberg location) and trout feed .

PegaPlus

After the new edition of the horse feed in 2008, the products are divided into the areas of muesli, pellets and by-products. All horse feed from Muskator-Werke is sold under the brand name Ovator PegaPlus .

Locations

The compound feed plant in Riesa

The Düsseldorf plant was the oldest and at the same time the company headquarters. The Muskator works were centrally managed from here. The management, administration, purchasing, sales, product development and marketing were based here. At the beginning of 2013 the administration moved to the industrial area in Kaarst-Büttgen. There was also a public petrol station there, which has been out of service since 2010. At the Düsseldorf location there were a total of three own compound feed plants; There were separate, neighboring plants for the areas of pet food, ruminant feed and the rest of the program. The plant on the side facing the old town, including the administration building, has already been shut down. There were other plants in Riesa, Deggendorf, Mannheim and Bamberg. In Riesa, a grain silo with a capacity of 40,000 tons of grain was sold to Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) in May 2011 . In August 2011 it was announced that the Mannheim site will be managed by the Belgian company Aveve from this point on . However, the feed continued to be sold under the brand names Muskator and Ovator.
