The muscle spasms-muscle-pain-and-fasciculations-syndrome is a rare disease with the eponymous main characteristics muscle cramps , muscle pain and fasciculations . Usually strong muscle spasms and twitching exist in otherwise healthy people.
The disease is the mildest form of the hyperexcitability syndromes of the peripheral nerves .
Synonyms are: Crampus fasciculation syndrome; Fasciculatory myalgia syndrome; Convulsive fasciculation syndrome
The name was coined by the authors of the first description from 1991 by the neurologist A. J. Tahmoush and colleagues.
Clinical manifestations
Clinical criteria are:
- Painful muscle spasms, often in the thighs and lower legs
- Physical activity can be a trigger
- Muscle stretching and / or massage can have a soothing effect.
A wide variety of muscle groups can be involved.
There is a high incidence of
therapy
Treatment with carbamazepine , gabapentin , lamotrigine or pregabalin has been helpful in individual cases.
