Maternity leave allowance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The maternity leave allowance was a financial benefit paid to employed mothers in the Federal Republic of Germany .

Amount and duration

In 1979, when it was introduced by the social-liberal coalition, it was DM 750 per month and was paid for up to six months. In 1984 the maternity leave allowance was reduced to 510 DM per month.

The ban on dismissal under the Maternity Protection Act was extended to six months, and the mother was insured for health, pension and unemployment free of charge during this time. With this legal betterment of women motherhood and work should be better connected to each other can be.

criticism

The maternity leave allowance met with criticism because fathers were not entitled to a corresponding benefit. In addition, this meant that the child-raising benefits were only recognized financially for mothers who were gainfully employed before the birth. For example, in 1985 the then Family Minister Heiner Geißler criticized "the unjust two-tier right to maternity leave allowance that only a mother who is employed in a gainful occupation receives".

history

The maternity leave allowance was replaced on January 1, 1986 by a child-raising allowance of DM 600 per month. The childcare allowance was intended to provide financial support for a temporary, complete exit from the profession, and indeed for a longer period of time than was the case with maternity leave allowance, and at the same time, in contrast to maternity leave allowance, should represent, at least within certain income limits, financial recognition of the childcare work, even of inactive mothers, in principle optionally available to mothers or fathers.
