Mother joke
The mother joke is a constant ability to understand facts quickly, to judge them and to react to them. Today the term corresponds to the shrewdness ( wisdom ) this ability.

The determinative compound consists of the nouns mother and joke . Here mother points out that the quality or ability is innate.
