Mutual of Omaha is a US insurance and financial services company headquartered in Omaha , Nebraska .

History and background

Mutual of Omaha was founded in 1909 by a medical student at Creighton University in Omaha under the name Mutual Benefit Health & Accident Association and initially specialized in health insurance . In 1920, the premium income reached the 1 million dollar mark for the first time, and in the same year the insurer was already approved in 15 states of the United States . In 1926, the United Benefit Life Insurance Company was founded, a subsidiary specializing in life insurance , which was later renamed United of Omaha . In 1939, Mutual was present in all 48 states at the time. In 1950 the company gave itself its current name.

Mutual of Omaha specializes in life insurance and retirement provision as well as health insurance. The group is regularly featured in the Fortune 500 , a list of the 500 top-selling companies in the United States per fiscal year.

Mutual of Omaha was the financier of the TV series In the Realm of the Wild Animals , the documentary series filmed mainly in Africa and South America, ran between 1963 and 1988 on American television and from 1973 also on German television. In 2002 there was a new edition at Animal Planet .
