building

The luxurious three-story tenement house was designed in 1908 and moved into in 1912 at Rüttgerstrasse 9 (today ks. J. Szafranka Strasse 9). It was built for Wilhelm Brieger, the owner of a construction company, and from the outset contained gas and water supply, electrical installation and district heating. Coal stoves were only in the kitchens. In 1919 Karl Polewka bought the house and in 1921 Siegmund Arz, owner of a cloth factory in Bielsko.

There were two apartments on each floor of the house - one with an area of 310 m², the second with an area of 150 m². They were rented by well-to-do people such as doctors, lawyers, and tradespeople. In 1939 the house was bought by Anna Grzesik. After the 2nd World War it came into communal ownership. Elżbieta Korfantowa, the widow of the well-known politician Wojciech Korfanty, lived in one of the apartments with her sister's family from 1947–1965 . In the first years after the war, the famous conductor Stanisław Skrowaczewski also lived here . In 1979 the building was designated for the Museum of the History of Katowice, which started operating in 1981.
