My Heart is Doris Day's 29th studio album . It was released on September 5, 2011 and was published by Sony Music .

History of origin

My Heart contains Doris Day's first studio recordings since 1967. The album The Love Album , released 17 years earlier, was recorded at this time, but was not released until 27 years later. The album contains recordings that her son Terry Melcher produced before his death in 2004. The recordings are from different years, most of them were recorded in the 1980s for the television show Doris Day's Best Friends and recently rediscovered. The songs were reshuffled.

As another producer, Bruce Johnston took part in the album, who also wrote the songs The Way I Dreamed It and Heaven Tonight . In Happy Endings and My Heart , he appeared as a co-writer along with Melcher. With Disney Girls there is also a cover version of his former band Beach Boys on the album. Additional covers are included with Daydream by The Lovin 'Spoonful and Joe Cockers You Are So Beautiful . Doris Day herself made the selection for the album and chose the songs that, in her opinion, best represent the love for her son and her animals.

From previous albums are the songs My One and Only Love (originally a duet with André Previn ), Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries from the previous album , My Buddy (from the 1951 album I'll See You in My Dreams ) and Ohio (by Show Time , 1960) included in newly recorded versions. My Buddy dedicated Doris Day to her deceased son.

The album was released on September 5, 2011 in Europe. A release in the United States followed on December 2, 2011.

Music style and reception

The album contains songs in the style of the old musicals in which Doris Day previously played, but also modern versions of older tracks. The music style is based on the pop songs of the 1960s. In the opinion of Tobias Weil from Intro magazine, they are "of luxurious, classic elegance and awaken the magic of days long past."

Artur Schulz from Laut.de judged:

“Seldom has a more mature artist sounded so clean, bright and lively in her vocal work. "My Heart" is pleasantly reminiscent of the times of glamorous nightclubs, when icons like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. provided style and glamor. Doris Day 2011 offers sparkling clean ear cinema for friends of the higher-class easy listening . "

success

The album went straight to number 9 in the UK album charts. At the age of 89, Doris Day became the oldest female artist in the history of the British charts, entering the top 10 with an album containing new material. The oldest surviving British chart topper, however, remained Vera Lynn , who topped the charts in 2009 with her greatest hits album.
