Mynigma (also known as M ) is an email client with built-in encryption . The program is free for private use.

The name “Mynigma” is derived from the Greek word “Ainigma” (αἴνιγμα, “riddle”).

Functionality

The specialty of Mynigma is the encryption mechanism, which is activated automatically if both parties use the client.

Mynigma attaches great importance to user-friendliness and is therefore particularly aimed at users who are less technically experienced.

Awards

Mynigma received the CeBIT Innovation Award in 2015 for its unique combination of security and usability. The company also took second place in the Berliner Sparkasse start-up award.

Name changes

Due to the possible risk of confusion with the instant messenger MyEnigma , the program was renamed M in March 2015 . Following the announcement of Facebook M in August 2015, the name was changed back to Mynigma .

privacy

The version for private users of the program is decentralized ( peer-to-peer ). No central server is used and no user data is collected.

safety

Mynigma is based on end-to-end encryption . The keys for decryption are only on the user's device.

The encryption format is publicly available and the source code is published under a GPL license .

Mynigma uses RSA with 4096-bit keys and OAEP padding , AES in CBC mode with 128-bit keys and random IV and SHA-512 as the hashing algorithm . The encryption format is demonstrably CCA- safe and encrypts subject lines as well as the message body and attachments.

Man-in-the-middle attacks

As with many systems based on the trust-on-first-use principle, Mynigma is also fundamentally susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks . However, similar to the Threema instant messaging service , this can be prevented by comparing a digital fingerprint (e.g. via the phone) or by scanning a QR code .

Press reports

Mynigma has been reported in numerous national newspapers (including Tagesspiegel, FAZ, die Welt). Mynigma appeared in the sixth issue of The Hundred magazine .
