Myrmosa atra is a Hymenoptera from the family of deceit ants (Myrmosidae).
features
The animals reach a body length of three to eight millimeters (females) or five to eleven millimeters (males). The thorax and the first tergite are colored red, which distinguishes the species from those of the similar genus Smicromyrme , the first tergite of which is black. Otherwise the abdomen and the head are dark in color. The females have a hairy thorax and are wingless.
Occurrence
The species is common in southern and central Europe. It colonizes sandy habitats with favorable temperatures. The animals occur from mid-June to mid-September. They can be found widespread in Central Europe.
Way of life
Myrmosa atra parasitizes the larvae of various burial wasps nesting in the ground , such as Crabro peltarius , Crossocerus palmipes , Diodontus minutus and above all Oxybelus uniglumis . The species is often found together with Smicromyrme rufipes .
