Mystery Magnum

Mysterium Magnum or Magnum Mysterium ( lat . Great secret ) is a term that has been interpreted differently in religion and philosophy .

Alchemy

Paracelsus and other alchemists used it to describe the disordered primordial matter from which all four elements developed.

mysticism

In 1623, Jakob Böhme wrote an explanation of the First Book of Moses under the title Mysterium Magnum . This work is considered to be his main theosophical work.

Christianity

The fourth (or fifth) Responsory of Matins at Christmas ( In Nativitate Domini ) begins with the words " O Magnum Mysterium " ( Incipit ; see there for the numerous settings). The term is found in Ephesians , chapter 5, verse 32, in relation to Christ and the Church. This term is also used in relation to the mystery of change .
