Mystery of Love was written and sung by Sufjan Stevens for the film Call Me by Your Name by Luca Guadagnino . It was Stevens' first commission for a film.

In his work, Stevens was inspired by the script for the film, its novel and conversations with the director about the characters. Just a few days before filming began, he sent Guadagnino the result. Stevens played an acoustic guitar in the style of Chris Thile , whom he described as the greatest living mandolin player on the planet, and added piano and synthesizer elements and the voices of some background singers to the piece.

Mystery of Love is considered the movie's theme song.

Movie

In the film, 17-year-old Elio spends the summer in his parents' country estate near Lake Garda. When the 24-year-old student Oliver Elio's father is supposed to assist with research work for six weeks, the two go on trips together more often. Elio soon feels feelings for Oliver and begins hesitant advances, which he increasingly intensifies. During a trip to a lake, Elio tries to seduce Oliver. Oliver, who is the first to respond to the advances, is afraid of a public exposure by Elio and withdraws. The two only approach each other again through brief correspondence. They sleep together but keep their relationship a secret. They also get used to addressing each other by the other's first name during sex.

With Mystery of Love , a trailer for the film released on August 1, 2017 was already included. The song is also featured on the Call Me by Your Name Original Motion Picture Soundtrack , which was released for download by Sony Classical on November 3, 2017 and on CD on November 17, 2017.
