Myxedema coma
The Myxoedema coma is the most serious and life-threatening onset form of hypothyroidism , which in non-treated patients by various triggers such as, inter alia, infection , surgery or trauma , certain medications strong, cold exposure can occur. It is very rare in primary health care areas these days.
Symptoms
The main symptoms are:
- Hypothermia (rectal temperature partially not measurable)
- Hypoventilation with hypoxia / hypercapnia
- Bradycardia and hypotension
- Myxedematous appearance (however, this does not occur in all cases)
therapy
The therapy consists mainly of intravenous administration of high-dose thyroid hormones (e.g. levothyroxine ), corticosteroids and glucose , regulation of the water and electrolyte balance , rewarming (e.g. with the help of conventional blankets).
