Nägele & Strubell is an Austrian perfumery chain with twelve branches.

history

On October 15, 1880 founded August Naegele and Moritz Richard Strubell in Vienna , the general store to wear perfume and drugstore goods "to Geneva Cross" at Graben 27, acted as a shareholder in both. That was the hour of birth of the perfumery “Nägele & Strubell”. The two soon recognized the Viennese love for luxury and began importing perfumes from France. But they also created their own fragrance creations, filled in crystal flacons. These were named: “Meet Eclate”, “Reseda” and “Rose Marechal”. The Protestant family Nägele emigrated from Nuremberg in Bavaria to religiously more tolerant Austria for reasons of faith . At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1904, Richard Prandstetter, the 30-year-old nephew of Mr. Nägele, took over the company which at that time was still called “Nägele & Strubell, Zum Genfer Kreuz”.

After he had paid off the partner Strubell and also completely rebuilt the business, he led the company, which was growing in importance, as the sole owner. Due to the fact that at that time not a few of the large French perfume companies had their own import agency in Austria-Hungary , Nägele & Strubell imported both finished perfumes and perfume essences and started their own perfume production. The in-house cologne was also mentioned in Heimito in Doderer's novel “ Strudlhofstiege ”. Nägele & Strubell were involved in both retail and wholesale. When Nägele & Strubell was appointed purveyor to the imperial court , the best circles of the aristocracy were also drawn there. Nägele & Strubell has been able to continuously expand its customer base with exclusive products and exceptional service. For example, through the well-developed postal service at that time, the wealthy Viennese society was also able to have its creams, powders and perfumes sent directly to their country estates. For this purpose, extensively illustrated price lists were sent out to customers on a regular basis, which was a very rare custom at that time.

After the collapse of the Danube monarchy and the global economic crisis , the company switched to the drugstore sector and sales increased significantly over time. After Richard Prandstetter's death in 1939, the business passed to his daughter Edith. She maneuvered the company through the tough war and post-war years.

In 1950 a general renovation was carried out, with which the last traces of the war were removed. The economic upswing slowly increased the population's interest in luxury goods . In 1967 the son Peter Piet Payer joined the company as a partner. After joining the “Nägele & Strubell” company, the business was rebuilt and the company re-established as a perfumery.

In 1994 the Payer family sold the company. Under the management of the Oelschlägel family from Vienna, the company expanded across Austria. There are five branches in Vienna, two in Salzburg , and one each in Linz, Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach and Innsbruck. The company also owns the special perfumery “Le Parfum” and four Antos perfumeries in Vienna.

In 2016, the portfolio was expanded with the online shop "AusLiebeZumDuft", which was already established in Germany, as a partner. Since 2017 the company has also been active in Switzerland with the new Parfumerie "Hyazinth" subsidiary.
