The Nöllenbrücke ( 401  m above sea level ) is located in the municipality of Widnau in Sankt Gallen , Switzerland . It is owned by the community of Widnau.

Pedestrians and bicycles cross the bridge on the same lane. The bridge, built in 1912, was built primarily for transport purposes and crosses the Rheintaler inland canal .

history

In 1875, at the expense of the community of Widnau, a covered wooden bridge was built over the Alpine Rhine a little south of today's steel bridge ( Wiesenrainbrücke ) in order to be able to more easily manage the agricultural land of the Widnau farmers (so-called "Schweizer Rieder" in the southern part of Lustenau) in Austria. This “private bridge” of the Swiss farmers was not approved for public border traffic. The Austrian tax authorities did not want an additional customs office at Wiesenrain / after Widnau. The other two Rhine bridges in the municipality of Lustenau and in Switzerland, the upper driving bridge and the lower driving bridge, shouldn't have any additional competition. This covered private wooden bridge near Widnau was demolished in 1912 as part of the work to regulate the Rhine .

The previous covered wooden bridge (later referred to as the Old Widnauer Bridge ) was split into four parts and one part became the Nöllenbrücke in Widnau, which still exists today. The market town of Lustenau and the Hofsteig communities in Austria acquired the central part of the bridge in 1914 and adapted it for the current transmitter bridge . Two other parts of this Rhine bridge were used as local bridges and led to the Widnau part of the Swiss Ried in Lustenau (these two bridges burned down).

Building

A railway bridge is in operation next to the Nöllenbrücke

The bridge with Howeschen girders is about 26 meters long and leads from east to west over the Rheintaler inland canal. The bridge has a gable roof covered with fiber cement shingles. It is passable for bicycles.

The Nöllenbrücke is also used as an art exhibition hall if required.

About 23 meters to the south is a railway bridge that runs parallel to the Nöllenbrücke.
