NIKO is an Austrian soul band . It used to be a rapper, now a band. Her music shows influences from different genres, including hip-hop . The band members live in Vienna .

history

Nikolai Selikovsky , frontman of the band NIKO started as a rapper in 2007 in the formation Projekt Licht . The three guys performed at hip-hop battles and hip-hop jams in Vienna and were able to make a name for themselves in the city with their program Projekt Licht TV. Among other things, they were also featured on the soundtrack of the Austrian film Sturmfrei . After Nikolai Selikovsky had a lot of solo songs as a rapper, he decided to work on a solo album. The producer was one of the three rappers from Projekt Licht, Smartie , who appeared as the lead actor named Luke in Sturmfrei . As the first harbinger appeared the single Not There , which got an airplay on GoTV. In December 2010 the first album was presented in Vienna's B72.

Dynamit is the first song whose raw version was self-produced on an MPC 2000XL and a video was also shot. With this video Selikovsky contacted the hip hop producer Kapazunda , who is enthusiastic about the song. The two then recorded some tracks together and the decision was made to produce an album. A management team became aware of the production and NIKO began to work with them. The album was supposed to be released in 2013, but the decision was made to remove all samples first and postponed the release. In the meantime, Kapazunda and NIKO began to compose the songs again. This resulted in the collaboration with other musicians and slowly a band began to form, which tried out a show with NIKO at the beginning of the year. In April 2014 NIKO + Band played live for the first time and presented the album Between Asphalt and Milky Way . NIKO + The Band performed at various festivals, including at Tanz durch den Tag on the Danube Island.

After several attempts at the end of the year, the band formed with new musicians under the name NIKO and the singer Olivia König has since taken over the management. The basic idea is to embody a soul band: background singers, double bass, drums, jazz guitar and a singer. In 2015, NIKO started a crowdfunding campaign and was the first band in Austria to finance a tour through crowdfunding and played in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This was followed by articles in ZIB , News , Salzburg24 as far as Germany in Die Zeit , and many other media. In the same year the band performed in various locations such as Mole West in Burgenland, Haus des Meeres in Vienna or in Gschupften Ferdl.

In 2018 the album Unter Strom was released on their own label Soulship Records .

Today, NIKO is a collective of musicians from different musical genres, the number of which varies when performing. Sometimes four and sometimes up to eight musicians perform live.
