NEPOMUK (of English Networked Environment for Personalized, Ontology-based Management of Unified Knowledge ) is an open-source software specification with the aim of a Semantic Desktop develop the metadata collected from various desktop applications and networked.

Nepomuk was developed through the NEPOMUK project. The costs amounted to 17 million euros, of which 11.5 million were financed by the European Union.
There are currently two implementations of NEPOMUK: A C ++ / KDE -based variant and a Java - Proof of Concept .
KDE
NEPOMUK-KDE is one of the newer technologies in KDE 4 . It uses the RDF backend Open Link Virtuoso and allows the association of metadata with various objects on a desktop, such as files, bookmarks, e-mails and calendar entries.
In KDE 4.13, NEPOMUK was replaced by Baloo . With Virtuoso as the RDF backend, it was not possible to achieve a satisfactory performance.
