NOS , formerly the News Office System , is a commercially developed software for managing library collections . It is aimed primarily at large companies, authorities and institutions that maintain specialist and specialist academic libraries . The library management software has been developed by the German company Bauer + Kirch GmbH since 1988 and sold as proprietary software for Windows.

Functional scope and delimitation

NOS is a library system , the functional scope of which maps the essential areas of the library system both for library staff and for users (readers). The core system consists of an OPAC (with dialog function and / or OPAC app if desired) as well as generic modules for cataloging (possibly with the help of external data sources), acquisition , lending , management of electronic media , individual articles, periodicals , monographs , etc. to search / research. E-mail distribution, contract, authorization and circulation management, evaluations and statistics, cost evaluation and accounting (including cost unit and cost center accounting) are further functions of the system. It can be expanded in a modular manner.

Areas of application and distribution

NOS was developed for the management of academic library collections and is mainly used by companies, authorities and institutes that have special requirements for their collection and cost management as well as the management of individual articles, periodicals and digital media.

The system is used by numerous companies, health insurance companies, banks and insurance companies. In addition, numerous authorities at state and federal level (e.g. the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Health) are users of this system.
