Veratrol is an aromatic chemical compound that belongs to the group of dimethoxybenzenes or phenol ethers . The sweet smelling liquid is sparingly soluble in water (3.67 g / l at 25 ° C), but easily miscible with all organic solvents.
presentation
Veratrol can be prepared by double methylation of catechol ( 1,2-dihydroxybenzene ) using dimethyl sulfate .
Otherwise it is also produced by thermal decomposition ( decarboxylation ) of veratrum acid .
use
Veratrol is used as a starting or intermediate product for the synthesis of other aromatic compounds, for example in the preparation of 3,4-dimethoxyacetophenone by means of Friedel-Crafts acylation .
Namely as well as structurally, three further compounds are derived from veratr ol through the introduction of a carbon atom: veratr yl alcohol, veratr umaldehyd, veratr um acid. The representation of veratraldehyde by means of Vilsmeier formylation .
