BITonline (also BIT online ) - with the subtitle : Journal for Library, Information and Technology with current Internet presence: www.bit-online.de  - is a German-language library specialist journal that provides information on current developments and technical applications in the library sector , primarily in German Room informs. It was founded in 1998 and is published quarterly by the Wiesbaden publishing house Dinges & Frick .

The trade journal

One of the founders of BITonline was the German librarian Rolf Fuhlrott , who was editor-in-chief of the magazine from 1998 to 2008 and its co-editor until 2011. BITonline is now published by the Dinges & Frick GmbH publishing house.

Fuhlrott's successor as editor-in-chief was the then director of the Karlsruhe KIT library, Christoph-Herbert Schütte, from 2008 to 2009, and the librarian Michael Mönnich (also KIT library Karlsruhe) from 2010 to February 2011 . Since then, the editorial team has been headed by the head of the ETH Zurich library , Rafael Ball .

BITonline was founded with the aim of using the emerging Internet and "being the first library magazine in the German-speaking region to present its full content in this medium", "but in the upheaval and transition phase with an accompanying print edition " in a modern layout . The articles are written by experts in the field of library science , the library building design , the archival science and the use of modern information systems etc.

The content of the journal consists of variable categories such as: " Abstracts " (in German, English and French); scientific "technical articles"; "News"; “ Reports ” on symposia , institutions and new library buildings ; "Company portraits"; " Digital News " about news in EDP / Multimedia / Telecommunications ; "Dates" and "Briefly noted" with u. a. Notes from the industry and personnel; numerous " reviews " and the "New Products" section with information about company products and services. In addition, each issue contains an extensive manufacturer directory. Special issues appear on certain topics, such as the BIX magazine with the current results of the national performance comparison for libraries in the BIX library index.

The BITonline innovation award

In cooperation with the Professional Association of Information Library (BIB), the magazine annually awards the BITonline innovation prize , which is intended to encourage prospective colleagues to make better use of creative potential in training and which is awarded for three diploma , bachelor or project theses . The award is endowed with prize money of 500  euros . The award-winning works are presented at the annual German Librarian's Day. In addition, the award winners and the authors of three other submitted works receive a free one-year membership in the Information Library professional association.
