Johann Lange (* 17th century ; † after 1696 ) was a German doctor and translator .

Life

Johann Lange lived in Hamburg . There he worked as a barber and surgeon from 1670 . In 1696 he can be proven to be still alive. Further life dates are not known.

Johann Lange translated many writings, especially edification literature , but also works on medicine , physics and chemistry , including from English into German. He also edited Latin treatises.

Most of his translations appeared either without naming the author or with the initials JL or JLMC , the latter standing for medicinae candidatus . Sometimes he describes himself as a citizen of Hamburg and a surgeon.

Lange produced his translations mainly on behalf of booksellers . Hence, it is believed that he translated in order to earn a living. But sometimes he writes in prefaces that he has little time for translations.
