For many years he was editor -in- chief of the library specialist journal B.ITonline, which he co-founded .

Life

Rolf Fuhlrott studied civil engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and graduated in 1961 with a degree in engineering . After completing his studies, he worked in various engineering offices for bridge construction and road planning until 1968. He then moved to the Karlsruhe University Library as a research assistant and began training as a research librarian , which he completed after completing a legal clerkship in 1971 with the second state examination at the Librarian Training Institute at the University of Cologne .

He then worked as a specialist in architecture , construction and art history at the University Library in Karlsruhe, where he was initially appointed head of department for the university's library system and, in 1975, deputy director. In the same year he did his doctorate with a thesis on historical architecture magazines at the University of Karlsruhe as Dr.

Due to his origins in the building industry, Fuhlrott dealt in particular with questions of the planning and construction of libraries , made numerous study trips to striking library buildings in Germany and abroad and developed into an expert in this field. He was soon appointed to various specialist bodies ; in 1972 he became a member of the building commission of what would later become the German Library Institute (DBI) and in 1975 its chairman. In 1977 Fuhlrott was appointed to the Section on Library Buildings and Equipment of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), in 1978 to the steering committee of the standards committee "Library and Documentation" of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and in 1982 to the working group " Libraries ”of the Science Council .

He specialized increasingly in the field of library building planning and passed on his knowledge with numerous lectures , teaching assignments and more than 100  publications . Fuhlrott was among other things co-founder in 1981/82 and co-editor from 1982 to 1997 of the specialist library journal ABI Technik . In 1998 he co-founded the BITonline  magazine for library, information and technology , was then its co-editor and from 1998 to 2008 its editor-in-chief. In 2011 he ended his functions with this magazine.

Fuhlrott retired from the library service in 1990 for reasons of age and then worked as a consultant and appraiser for library planning. From 2011 he was a member of the Friedrich Weinbrenner Society and endeavored to preserve the heritage in Karlsruhe and Baden by this master builder of classicism. At the same time he started working for the magazine Badische Heimat , in which he wrote regularly on Baden topics.
