Michael Wilhelm Mönnich (born March 6, 1959 in Tübingen ) is a German librarian , pharmacist and since 2010 head of the user services department as well as deputy director of the library of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ( KIT library ).

Career

Michael Wilhelm Mönnich was born on March 6, 1959 in Tübingen as the son of the general practitioner Dr. med. Walter Mönnich and the pharmacist Lore Mönnich, b. Ebensperger, born. After attending primary and secondary school in Eningen unter Achalm from 1966 to 1969 and the Friedrich-List-Gymnasium in Reutlingen from 1969 to 1978, he began studying chemistry at the University of Zurich that same year . In 1980 he moved to the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen , where he studied pharmacy from 1980 to 1984 and finally received his license as a pharmacist in 1985 after the practical year in the Burckhardt'sche pharmacy in Eningen under Achalm . At the same time, Mönnich began studying the history of pharmacy , historical auxiliary sciences and Latin philology of the Middle Ages at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1984, which he successfully completed in 1986. From then on he worked on his dissertation on "Medicine and Pharmacy in the works of Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639)", led by Wolf-Dieter Mueller Jahncke and in 1989 for Dr. rer. nat. PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . During this period he also worked part-time in the Burckhardt pharmacy.

He then did a legal clerkship for the higher library service at the University Library Karlsruhe and the FHBD Cologne until 1991 , so that in the same year he took a position as a library assessor at the University Library Karlsruhe (now the KIT library), in 1993 as a library councilor , in 1995 as a senior library councilor and in 2001 as a library director could compete.

Together with Axel Helmstädter , he organized the DGGP Biennale in Karlsruhe in 2002 . Library activity

Mönnich is currently deputy library director of the KIT library and responsible for the organizational area of ​​user services. During his many years of activity at the Karlsruhe University Library, he oversaw numerous IT projects, such as the development of the OLIX online catalog, the Karlsruhe cataloging system KARIN and the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK). He was also involved in setting up modern and pioneering services, for example the recommender service Bibtip, the electronic university bibliography and the establishment of a university publishing house (now KIT ​​Scientific Publishing), the electronic repository EVA (now KITOpen) and the digitization of old library holdings. In the area of ​​use, an electronic guide for free learning and workplaces (Seatfinder) was developed under his leadership and the Karlsruhe learning room day was launched. At the library he has organized various exhibitions on the history of science, for example "Encyclopedias. Storytelling. Knowledge." (2016), "175 Years of the KIT Library" (2015), "Karl Weltzien - Founder of Karlsruhe Chemistry" (2013) or "150 Years of the Karlsruhe Chemist Congress" (2010).
