The NSC 8250 from National Semiconductor (NS) was the UART provided in the IBM Personal Computer standard design for implementing asynchronous data transmission over the RS-232 interface. Pin-compatible successors are the NS 16450 and NS 16550 , which were used in the IBM Personal Computer / AT .
Some PC manufacturers deviated from its use and instead used the slightly incompatible Intel 8251 .
