NTBackup is an integrated backup application that was included for Windows NT 4.0 from 1997 and part of all subsequent versions up to and including Windows 2000 , Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 . NTBackup uses a proprietary backup format (BKF) to back up files. Files can be backed up to tape, ZIP drives, floppy disks, and hard drives . It also has multiple command line switches for scheduled, automated backups .

As of Windows Vista , NTBackup has been replaced by Windows Backup and Restore, which uses the VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) file format , this program also supports modern media such as DVDs and image-based full system backups .

For server operating systems , Microsoft has replaced NTBackup with Windows Server Backup, starting with Windows Server 2008 , which includes the new wbadmin command. This new backup application, wbadmin, no longer supports tape drives , which means that users need to install third-party applications to back up to tape drives .

To read / restore older backups, Microsoft has made the NTBackup Restore utility available for Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008 and for Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 that can read these BKF files. When using tape drives , NTBackup uses the Microsoft Tape Format (MTF).

properties

NTBackup supports several operating system functions, including backing up the system state of the computer. For computers that are not a domain controller , this includes the Windows registry , boot files, files protected by Windows File Protection, performance counter configuration information, COM + class registry , IIS metabase, replicated records, Exchange server data , cluster service information and the certificate services - database . NTBackup can also back up Active Directory on domain controllers .

NTBackup supports the Encrypted File System (ESF), alternate data streams , hard drive quota information, attached drives, and remote storage information. It stores NTFS permissions, audit entries and ownership settings and can create normal, copy, differential, incremental and daily backups , backup catalogs and automated system recovery . It supports logging and excluding files from backup per user or for all users. Hardware compression is supported if the tape drive can support it. Software compression is not supported, even for backup files.

NTBackup can also use removable media devices such as B. Use USB sticks .

NTBackup from Windows XP includes Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) support and can therefore back up locked files. Windows XP Home Edition does not have NTBackup installed by default, but it is available on the Windows XP installation CD. Windows XP also introduced a wizard for NTBackup.

A system administrator can use the NTBackup scripting language to create a functional backup system. Scripting enables the system administrator to automate and schedule backups of files and system status. An alternative to scripting is GUI software such as BackupAssist, which automates NTBackup and can carry out automatic, scheduled backups of Windows-based servers and PCs with NTBackup.

NTBackup can be used from Windows Vista onwards by copying the NTBackup files from a Windows XP computer. To use tapes or other backup components, you must use the Removable Storage Manager, which must be activated in the Windows functions. This component has been removed in Windows 7 .
