NWA 869 meteorite

NWA 869 is a stone meteorite . Fragments of it were first discovered in 1999 in the Algerian desert near Tindouf . The meteorite was named NWA (North-West-Africa) 869. So far, about 1.5 tons of the meteorite material have been found. The individual fragments have a different appearance. Some specimens show signs of brecciation that are not visible in others.

The meteorite comes from the asteroid belt and is classified as a chondrite of class L 5 ( UCLA ), also as L 3.9 to 6. Meteorites of this type were exposed to high temperatures of 700 to 750 ° C during their formation, as a result of which their crystalline structure was partially transformed.

Chemical composition: 5 to 10% iron (no more precise information was found in the literature).
