calculation
The NYSE Composite is a price index in which all public companies of the New York Stock Exchange are listed. The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the listed companies. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The calculation is updated every second during NYSE trading hours from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm local time (3:30 pm to 10:00 pm CET).
history
Historical overview
The NYSE Composite started on December 31, 1965 with an index base of 50 points. After a recalculation in January 2003, the index base for December 31, 2002 was set at 5,000 points. The NYSE Composite was calculated back to December 31, 1965 using the new method to a closing level of 528.69 points. The index marked its all-time low on October 3, 1974, when it ended trading at 347.77 points.
On May 6, 1983, the NYSE Composite closed for the first time above the 1,000 point mark and on July 3, 1997 for the first time above the 5,000 point mark. The index reached further record levels in the following years. By September 1, 2000, it rose to a closing level of 7,164.55 points, which was its all-time high for half a decade. After the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ) burst , the stock market barometer fell to a low of 4,452.49 points by October 9, 2002. That was a decrease from September 1, 2000 by 37.9 percent.
October 9, 2002 marked the end of the downward trend. In the fall of 2002, the NYSE Composite began to rise again. On December 21, 2004, the index closed at 7,167.03 points, above its high of September 2000. The 10,000 point mark fell for the first time on June 1, 2007, when the index closed at 10,042.60 points. On 13 July 2007, all companies listed in the index scored with 21.991 trillion US dollars , the highest market capitalization in history. On October 12, 2007 the NYSE Composite marked an all-time high with a closing level of 10,301.49 points. The increase since October 9, 2002 is 131.4 percent.
In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. On November 20, 2008, it closed below the limit of 5,000 points for the first time since April 16, 2003 with 4,651.21 points. The NYSE Composite fell to its lowest level since April 21, 1997 on March 9, 2009 when it closed at 4,226.31 points. Since the all-time high of October 12, 2007, this corresponds to a decrease of 56.6 percent. The market capitalization of all companies listed in the index was $ 8.504 trillion on March 9, 2009, 61.4 percent lower than on July 13, 2007.
March 9, 2009 marked the end of the downward trend. From the spring of 2009 the stock market index recovered strongly. By February 18, 2011, it rose 101.3 percent to a closing level of 8,507.90 points. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the share index. On October 3, 2011, the NYSE Composite finished trading at 6,571.45 points. The loss since the high on February 18, 2011 is 22.8 percent.
The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 10, 2013, the index closed at 8,713.75 points, 32.6 percent higher than on October 3, 2011.
