Well příkopě
Na příkopě (German Graben or Am Graben ) is a street in the center of Prague .
location
The moat connects Wenceslas Square with Republic Square and forms the border between the old town and the new town . It is partly a pedestrian zone . The streetscape is dominated by representative buildings, including the headquarters of the Czech National Bank , palaces and luxury shops.
history
The street is on the site of a trench that was dug from 1232 to 1834 near the facilities in Prague's Old Town. In 1760 the ditch was filled in and a street was built, which was first called Ve starých alejích ("In the old avenues"). From 1839 to 1870 it was renamed Kolowratská třída (" Kolowrat Avenue") and since 1871 has had its current name.
Friedrich Torberg described the “Graben” as the parade of Prague's high society, where the city's social and business life took place around the turn of the 20th century. A famous meeting point was the hotel "Zum schwarzen Ross", where numerous illustrious guests stayed, including Ludwig van Beethoven (1812) and Frédéric Chopin (1829). The social center of the Germans in Prague from 1875 to 1945 was the building complex Am Graben 22-24. (See also: German House (Prague) )
