Nabih Berri

Nabih Berri ( Arabic نبيه بري Nabih Birri , DMG Nabīh Barrī ; * January 28, 1938 in Freetown or in Bo , Sierra Leone ) is the President of Parliament of Lebanon. He is a lawyer and, as a politician, the leader of the Shiite Amal movement .

He was born in exile in West Africa to Mustafa Berri. The family moved back to Tibnin in Greater Lebanon in 1939 or 1940 . After Musa al-Sadr's disappearance in 1978, Nabih Berri took over the Amal militia in 1981 and in various alliances and from 1984 various ministerial posts (water and energy, justice, reconstruction of the south). In 1985 he negotiated the Tripartite Agreement with Elie Hobeika and Walid Dschumblat under Syrian patronage , which was supposed to end the Lebanese civil war . This agreement was broken a short time later and it was not until 1989 that the civil war was ended by the Taif Agreement . From 1992 he held the office of the Lebanese Parliament President several times .

The Amal movement is considered to be pro-Syrian and, as the Amal militia, dramatically changed fronts several times during the Lebanese civil war (with and against the PLO , with and against the Progressive Socialist Party , with and against Hezbollah ).
