Nabis ferus (also wild sickle bug ) is a type of bug fromthe sickle bug family (Nabidae).

features

The bugs become 7.5 to 8.6 millimeters long. They have a gray to brown basic color and always fully developed (macroptere) wings, with the hemielytres reaching behind the end of the abdomen. One can distinguish the kind of macropter individuals of Nabis rugosus and Nabis ericetorum by the dense hairs of the hemielytras. In addition, their pronotum is significantly longer with a size ratio of 1.75: 1.3 (width: length). Nabis pseudoferus is also very similar, but this species also lacks the heavily hairy hemielytras and it also has significantly less hair at the apex of the corium. Below the hemielytres, the back of the abdomen is a single color and dark. A dark central line runs from the head to the scutellum . The membrane of the hemielytres is at the base of a cell surrounded by veins.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe, with the exception of the north of the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula. In the east, the distribution extends over Siberia and Central Asia to China and Japan. In Germany and Austria the species occurs everywhere and is mostly not uncommon, but significantly less common than Nabis pseudoferus .

Open to partially shaded, grassy, moderately dry to moist habitats are populated.

Way of life

Nabis ferus feeds non-specifically on different prey animals. The flighty adults hunt on the ground and in the herb layer. The wintering takes place as an imago in loose, dry soil litter, also in forests. The females pierce their eggs in May and early June in more or less large groups of a maximum of 20 in cavities in blades of grass, and rarely in the stems of herbaceous plants. The nymphs appear from the beginning of June, the adults of the new generation from around August.
