The lighting of control elements of technical devices is called night design .

history

The term night design was the mid-1980s for the first time for the car stereo company Blaupunkt used. At first, only individual function buttons of the car radio were illuminated all around, a short time later the individual lettering on the control buttons or the front panels of the car radio were illuminated separately using fiber optic technology .

Today, many technical control elements with lighting are referred to as control units with "night design".

Sense of the night design

The lighting of individual control elements is used to safely operate technical devices in the dark . In addition to the lighting through the "night design", such operating elements could also be illuminated from the outside. However, due to the greater light intensity, this leads to problems with the dark adaptation of the human eye.

Control elements in night design are particularly common in the control stands in modern means of transport, especially in the cockpits of motor vehicles.
