The naked- throated bellbird ( Procnias nudicollis ) is a South American screeching bird from the family of ornamental birds .
features
It reaches a size of 27 cm. The male has white plumage with blue-green bare skin on the eyes and on the throat, which is covered with black bristles. The females are colored olive green on the upper side, the wings and the tail and yellowish white dashed on the underside. The head is black, the chest is olive green and lightly dashed.
The metallic-sounding, bell-like call is one of the loudest utterances in the bird world.
behavior
The bare-throated bellbird usually hangs quietly in the treetops and feeds on fruits.
Occurrence
The bird lives in the mountain tropical forest in eastern Brazil , Paraguay and northern Argentina . In winter it moves to deeper regions.
Reproduction
The male calls for a female from an exposed place with his head thrown back. If a possible partner appears, it begins to hop from branch to branch with its tail feathers spread.
After mating, a thin, bowl-shaped nest of sticks is built in a fork of a branch, preferably at a height of 5 to 7 m in cocoa trees. A single light brown egg is laid, which is speckled with dark brown. The incubation period is 23 days. The young are fully fledged after 33 days.
Specialty
In Paraguay, the metal-sounding song of the bird stimulated the musicians there to play a piece. “Pajaro Campana” is both the title and the name of the bird in Spanish.
