Nadar's portrait photo of Sarah Bernhardt is the work of the French photographer, caricaturist and writer Nadar (1820–1910, actually Gaspard-Félix Tournachon ).
The portrait photograph shows the young, still unknown actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) and was probably made in 1859/1860. Today the masterpiece is in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris (inventory number PHO 1983 165 131). A print from 1864 has also survived.
The photograph is 21.6 cm high and 17.2 cm wide. It is a salted paper print of a collodion - glass negative .
The young actress leans on a stump of a column. The face is framed by dark curls. She seems to meet the beholder's gaze. A light robe, draped in folds, envelops the delicate figure. The light shines on Bernhardt from the top left. The composition of the picture is a triangular composition with Bernhardt's head as the highest point.
