The coniferous weevil ( Magdalis memnonia ) is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The beetles are 4.6–8 mm long. They have a black basic color. Strong stripes of large square dots run across the slightly shiny wing covers . The point strips are separated by narrow spaces. The base of the wing-coverts is rounded. The 1st and 2nd sternite are roughly and deeply dotted.

distribution

The beetle species is native to the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe, but is absent in Fennos Scandinavia and the Irish island . In the south the occurrence extends to North Africa, in the east to Siberia .

Way of life

Pines ( Pinus ) and spruces ( Picea ) serve as host plants for the beetle species . Eggs are laid under the bark of weakened or freshly dead branches. The hatched larvae bore into the pulp of the twigs. They eat this out over a length of about 10 cm. They then pupate at the end of the feeding tunnels. This usually happens in summer. The beetles usually overwinter in the branches and do not appear until the following spring. They are then observed between late April and late June.

Since the affected trees are usually already damaged in some other way, the coniferous weevil is usually not classified as a forest pest .
