Nahiya

Nahiya or Nahia ( Arabic ناحية, DMG Nāḥiya ) referred to a subordinate administrative unit in the Arab states and in the Ottoman Empire . Such districts included a number of villages and sometimes a smaller town. Several of them formed a province, for example a sanjak in the Ottoman Empire and a governorate (muhafaza) in Jordan .
