The Namib High School (NHS) ( German  Namib Oberschule ; formerly German Oberschule Swakopmund ) is a secondary school in the Namibian coastal town of Swakopmund . The school is a state educational institution that continues to use German as the language of instruction (in addition to English in some cases ).

The Namib High School is no longer to be confused with the state Swakopmund Secondary School , which has always used English as the language of instruction.

history

The NHS was founded in Swakopmund in 1912 as the first formal educational institution. On October 18, 1913, 126 pupils started school at the "Städtische Realschule mit Grundschule". Between 1919 and 1929 the school was called "Swakopmund Primary School". Until 1945 the school was known as the “Reformrealgymnasium”. In 1946 the name of the school was changed to "Swakopmund High School". At that time, students with different mother tongues attended the class together. With the expansion of the school offer in Swakopmund in the mid-1970s, the NHS became the "German School Swakopmund", then in 1981 the "German High School Swakopmund". At that time, German was the only language of instruction. Since the independence of Namibia, the NHS has taught in English and German. In mid-2012, a large majority of the almost 600 students and their parents spoke out in favor of further strengthening German. Since then, this has been a compulsory subject for all students in all grades.

On July 7, 1997, the school was renamed “Namib High School” due to legal regulations without any connection to ethnicities or languages. Today (as of 2020) 602 students are taught at the school.
