Narcissism of small differences

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In his treatise Das Unbehagen in der Kultur (1930), Sigmund Freud called narcissism of small differences “a convenient and relatively harmless satisfaction of the tendency to aggression ”. In all human communities, hostile resentment among otherwise equal people cannot be eliminated. However, it makes community cohesion easierif the aggression is directed towards neighboring, close communities instead of inward.

The narcissism of small differences manifests itself in harmless form in rivalries between neighboring peoples (Portuguese versus Spaniards), regions (Bavaria versus Prussia) or cities ( Cologne versus Düsseldorf ). Even the anti-Semitism explains Freud except in Civilization and Its Discontents in his book Moses and Monotheism (1939) partially with this narcissistic inclination to aggression, which is opposed to a minority that is not materially different from their "host nations", but “Often in an indefinable way different from the Nordic peoples” and, what counts even more, their relatives “show the ability to assert themselves in working life and, where allowed, make valuable contributions to all cultural achievements”.
