Nasi Lemak ( Malay : rice fat ) is a Malaysian rice dish, which is mainly offered in Malaysia, Brunei , Singapore and southern Thailand and is eaten both for breakfast and at other times of the day. A similar dish is sold in Indonesia called nasi uduk .

The most important ingredient is rice , which is soaked in coconut milk and then steamed , often together with leaves of the screw trees ( pandan ).

The hot and spicy sambal chilli sauce is an important side dish. Sambal is made from several types of pepper, chili pepper and mostly a baked shrimp paste . The taste can be mixed with tomatoes , onions , lemongrass and sweet fruits such as B. Mangos , but also with shrimp and fish balls, which are cooked, refined.

Traditionally, cucumber slices , roasted peanuts , dried anchovies and a hard-boiled egg are included as side dishes. Furthermore, nasi lemak is often eaten together with ayam rendang , fried chicken or other meat dishes.

All over Malaysia, nasi lemak wrapped in newspaper or banana leaves (in the shape of a pyramid) can be found in street restaurants and markets. Nasi Lemak is also part of the breakfast buffet in hotels.
