Pandanus amaryllifolius is a species of the screw trees ( Pandanus ) in the screw tree family(Pandanaceae). The first description by William Roxburgh was published posthumously in 1832. A synonym is Pandanus odorus Ridl. The species is cultivated in large parts of Southeast Asia .
description
Pandanus amaryllifolius is an evergreen plant that forms woody aerial roots. The sword-shaped leaves smell pleasantly nutty; it is the only species within the diverse genus Pandanus with this property. The aroma is mainly developed by dried leaves.
Male flowers are very rare; There is no scientific description of female flowers. The plant is therefore considered sterile. In culture it is propagated vegetatively.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 70.
distribution
The species is cultivated in large parts of tropical Asia. The original distribution area is not known, one suspicion indicates the Moluccas as the origin.
use
The fragrant leaves, which contain various alkaloids, are used as a condiment in many cuisines of Southeast Asia . Since they cannot be dried without losing their aroma, they are used either fresh or in the form of an essence . The intense aroma is described as similar to vanilla to slightly nutty.
The fresh leaves ( Indonesian Daun pandan , Thai Bai toei , ใบ เตย ) are either cooked or the food is wrapped in the leaves and steamed or deep-fried in them; In all cases the leaves are only used for flavoring and are not consumed. Pandan leaves are often used in the preparation of less high-quality rice varieties , as their taste can be enhanced in this way.
Pests
The plants can be attacked by the pest Laminococcus pandani from the family of mealybugs (Pseudococcidae).
In the countries of origin, pandan leaves are used to drive away cockroaches.
