Nate Thayer

Nate Thayer (born April 21, 1960 ) is an American journalist who works for the Associated Press , Jane’s Defense Weekly, Washington Post , Phnom Penh Post and Far Eastern Economic Review , among others .

Life

In July 1997, Thayer made headlines around the world when he reported exclusively on the “People's Tribunal” of the Khmer Rouge against Pol Pot in the jungle of northern Cambodia . Together with the cameraman David McKaige, Thayer was the only foreign eyewitness to the sentencing of the former ruler to life imprisonment.

In October 1997 he became the second Western journalist (after Elizabeth Becker 1978) to interview Pol Pot. Nate Thayer later held talks with other Khmer Rouge officials, including Ta Mok and Kang Kek Leu , the head of the S-21 torture center (Tuol Sleng) .
